Africa’s soccer scene is gaining momentum, with nine out of 10 competing African nations advancing to the knockout stages in the 2026 World Cup. Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo, who played every minute of Ghana’s 2026 World Cup campaign, shared his thoughts on the continent’s soccer growth.
Africa’s Soccer Evolution
Semenyo recalled playing against Cape Verde in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, saying, ‘They were so, so good. So this wasn’t any news to us, but obviously to the world it was.’ He believes Africa’s success in the World Cup shows that the continent is competing at the highest levels.
Semenyo, who was born in England to Ghanaian parents, has had an unconventional rise to soccer’s elite. He faced early rejections and journeyed through England’s non-league system before earning a move to Manchester City. Semenyo often refers to himself as a ‘late bloomer’ in the sport.
As Manchester City prepares for the new season with a new manager, Enzo Maresca, Semenyo is optimistic about the team’s chances. He praised Maresca’s attention to detail and believes the team will adapt to his tactics.
Semenyo’s Ghanaian heritage plays a significant role in his soccer career. He said, ‘Strength, for sure. Pace. Excitement is another thing. All the Ghanaian fans are so excited when we play.’ He hopes to inspire young Ghanaian players and make his country proud.
