Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling (MLP) announced that its Northern Rising show will take place on October 3 at the historic Maple Leaf Gardens, now the Mattamy Athletic Centre, in Toronto. The event marks a full‑circle moment for Adam Copeland, the former AEW and WWE performer who grew up watching wrestling at the same arena.
Copeland’s personal connection to the venue
Copeland told OutKick that Maple Leaf Gardens was the first place he ever saw live professional wrestling. He recalled the experience as a release from the challenges of his youth, including the loss of his uncle. The arena, he said, held special meaning because it was also the home of the Toronto Maple Leafs, a team he followed avidly.
“The first time I saw it, I was nine or ten and it felt like a dream,” Copeland said. “Seeing it again, now as a competitor, is incredibly special.”
From fan to competitor
Although Copeland performed for major U.S. promotions that held shows at venues like the SkyDome (now Rogers Centre) and the Air Canada Centre (now Scotiabank Arena), he never had the chance to wrestle inside Maple Leaf Gardens. The upcoming Northern Rising show gives him that opportunity, alongside longtime industry colleague Scott D’Amore, who co‑owns MLP.
Copeland expressed gratitude to D’Amore for helping arrange the appearance and said he looks forward to adding his own chapter to the arena’s storied history.
Event details
Northern Rising is already sold out as MLP builds toward the larger show. The promotion runs a weekly television program called “Mayhem,” which airs on TSN. Fans can expect a mix of Canadian talent and international wrestlers, with Copeland’s match highlighted as a marquee attraction.
The event underscores the enduring appeal of professional wrestling in Toronto and the significance of historic venues in preserving the sport’s cultural legacy.
