A Million Years of Alabama Under One Roof: Spending a Day at the Montgomery Museum of Natural History

There is a spot just outside the main bustle of Montgomery that most visitors drive right past without a second glance, and that is a genuine shame. Kidd’s Mill Covered Bridge, tucked into a quiet stretch of Elmore County just northeast of the city, is one of Alabama’s last remaining covered wooden bridges, and standing inside its weathered timber frame for the first time feels like stepping into a photograph your great-grandmother might have kept on her mantel.

Built in 1855 and spanning Uphapee Creek, the bridge stretches roughly 96 feet and was constructed in the traditional Burr arch truss style, a method that gave these structures a surprising resilience. The fact that it is still standing after nearly 170 years — surviving floods, neglect, and the general brutality of Alabama summers — is something close to a miracle. The Alabama Historical Commission has worked to preserve it, and a visit here rewards anyone who appreciates craftsmanship built to outlast the people who built it.

Getting there is part of the charm. The drive northeast from downtown Montgomery takes you through stretches of rolling farmland and pine forest that remind you how much open country still surrounds this city. The bridge sits within a small natural area along the creek, shaded by hardwoods that turn a burnished copper and gold in October and November. If you time your visit for a weekday morning in autumn, you may well have the entire place to yourself — just the sound of the creek moving beneath your feet and the occasional call of a red-tailed hawk overhead.

Walk through the bridge slowly. Run your hand along the wooden lattice if you like. Look up at the timber joinery and consider that the men who cut and fitted those beams used hand tools and knew no other way. The structure carries a particular kind of quiet authority that modern construction simply cannot replicate. Photographers — amateur and professional alike — make the pilgrimage regularly, especially in the golden-hour light of late afternoon when the creek catches the sun and the old boards glow like something out of a painting.

Bring a picnic. Bring your good walking shoes. Bring someone you want to talk to without the distraction of a screen in your hand. The natural area around the bridge is modest but genuinely pleasant, with the creek accessible enough for a bit of wading if the mood strikes and the weather cooperates. There is nothing particularly grand about the setting in the way that state parks with visitor centers and gift shops are grand — and that is precisely the point.

Montgomery tends to draw travelers toward its exceptional civil rights landmarks and its lively downtown dining scene, both of which deserve every bit of the attention they receive. But the city and its surrounding county hold quieter rewards too, and Kidd’s Mill Covered Bridge is among the most rewarding of them. It asks nothing of you except a little time and a willingness to slow down, and in return it offers a direct, unmediated connection to a version of Alabama that most people never get the chance to see.

Plan an easy half-day out of it. Drive out in the morning, spend an unhurried hour or more at the bridge, then wind your way back into Montgomery for a late lunch in Old Cloverdale or along the Dexter corridor. It is the kind of day that leaves you feeling like you have actually been somewhere, rather than simply passed through.
