It has been 15 years since the life of notorious mobster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger came to an end in California. Bulger, along with his partner Catherine Greig, was arrested in Santa Monica on June 22, 2011. Former FBI agent Rich Teahan, who was part of the team that captured Bulger, recalls the day vividly.
Capture and Aftermath
According to Teahan, Bulger looked ‘beaten’ following his arrest, which came after more than 16 years on the run. The couple had been living a quiet life in a Santa Monica apartment, with Greig handling all errands. Their cover was eventually blown when a neighbor recognized Greig from a public service announcement and tipped off the authorities.
Teahan, who co-authored a book about the case, noted that Bulger’s focus during his six-hour flight back to Boston was striking. Despite being in his early 80s, Bulger refused food, bathroom breaks, or to discuss his crew, only talking about deceased associates.
Bulger’s capture marked the end of a long and infamous career in organized crime. He was later convicted of murdering 11 people and was beaten to death by fellow inmates in a federal penitentiary in West Virginia in 2018.
