Wildaliz Bermúdez, a Fair Haven resident and executive director of the city’s Fair Rent Commission, officially launched her campaign to represent the 97th General Assembly District on Saturday. The district covers parts of Fair Haven, Quinnipiac Meadows, Fair Haven Heights, and Morris Cove.

Campaign Kickoff

Bermúdez’s campaign kickoff took place after she successfully petitioned for a place on the Aug. 11 Democratic primary ballot, garnering 492 signatures from registered Democrats in the district. She will challenge party-endorsed candidate Leland Moore, a first-term Morris Cove alder and assistant state attorney general.

The rally, which took place on the Grand Avenue Bridge, featured a marching band and speeches from Bermúdez and her supporters. Bermúdez’s friend Josh Michtom, a member of the Hartford City Council, led the marching band Hartford Hot Several across the bridge.

Bermúdez discussed her campaign priorities, including funding for public schools, and thanked her supporters for their enthusiasm and dedication. Her campaign treasurer, Shannon Raider, said the location of the rally was chosen for its symbolism, as the Grand Avenue Bridge was closed for repairs during the Covid-19 pandemic and reopened in 2022.

Bermúdez’s experience in both Hartford and New Haven was seen as an advantage by many attendees, who believe she can build on existing relationships to secure funding for the city. Her campaign has gained momentum, with supporters from around Hartford and New Haven attending the rally.
