US women’s team coach Emma Hayes has spent a significant portion of her professional coaching career in the United States and believes that soccer will become the number one sport in the country.
A Growing Sport
Hayes first arrived in the US in 2002 to coach the amateur Lady Riders team and has since worked with several teams, including the Chicago Red Stars and the Western New York Flash. She is now the head coach of the US Women’s National Team (USWNT) and is hoping to lead the squad into the FIFA Women’s World Cup next year.
Hayes believes that the growth of the professional game, the fandom of the professional game, and the growth of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and Major League Soccer (MLS) will contribute to soccer becoming the number one sport in the US. She also notes that it is now easier to find soccer on TV than it was 20 years ago.
A Measured Approach
Hayes is known for her measured approach to the game, which has helped propel her to the top of the sport. She believes in forming strong relationships with her players and is passionate about using her wisdom and experience to help them grow. Hayes also believes in being adaptable and learning from her players, saying that they are her greatest teachers.
Hayes recently spent time at the corporate side of Coca-Cola, learning about leadership techniques and how to apply them to her coaching. She remains grounded and humble, crediting her family with keeping her feet on the ground.
