Torrential rainfall over the past weekend led to severe flooding across Springfield, with the U-Haul Moving & Storage in north Springfield being hit especially hard. Up to 204 units at the storage facility, located at 1768 N. Glenstone Ave., were impacted by the flooding, according to Jeff Lockridge, U-Haul manager of media and public relations.
The flooding occurred at the easternmost of two buildings on the property, which has at least 1,400 units. Lockridge said the U-Haul team is making fast work of the cleanup and the facility is already able to rent dry and secure self-storage units to new customers.
Cleanup Efforts
As of midday Tuesday, June 16, just over half of the occupied storage units in question had been opened, cleaned, and had damaged items inventoried, Lockridge said. Severe thunderstorms with tornadoes and damaging winds hit Springfield late in the evening of June 13, according to the National Weather Service.
The storm system caused flash flooding and multiple fatalities. Over June 13-14, nearly 3.5 inches of rainfall was recorded at the Springfield-Branson National Airport, according to the city’s Rain Gauge Network. Beginning on June 14, the company reached out to potentially affected tenants.
U-Haul has asked customers to inspect their units between June 15-17. The company has also offered to open up units and start the clean-up process while documenting the damage. Undamaged items from flooded units were placed in a U-Box portable storage container at the site, Lockridge said.
Repwest Insurance adjusters are on the scene this week to help customers file claims if they carried damage protection through U-Haul. For those who were hit by the flash flooding in Springfield last weekend, U-Haul can provide its disaster relief program at all three Springfield storage facilities.
This program includes 30 days of free self-storage and U-Box use. There are two other U-Haul storage facilities in Springfield, located at 3145 S. Campbell Ave. and 3150 S. Campbell Ave.
