A small jet carrying six people crashed on a highway in Laredo, Texas, Tuesday evening, resulting in one fatality. The plane, a NetJets-operated Cessna Citation Latitude business jet, had departed San José del Cabo, Mexico, and was bound for Austin, Texas, before diverting toward Laredo.
According to Laredo Police Public Information Officer Jose Baeza, the plane reported mechanical issues before losing contact with air traffic controllers and crashing on Loop 20 highway. Bystanders assisted emergency responders in rescuing passengers from the burning aircraft.
Five officers responding to the crash site were transported to a local hospital for treatment related to injuries sustained during the rescue operation. The identities of the six people on board and their conditions have not been released.
Federal agencies, including the National Transportation Security Board and the Federal Aviation Administration, have been notified and are investigating the incident.
