The city of West Haven has completed a five-year project to restore a 1.5-acre stretch of its shoreline, creating Eco Park. The area was previously overgrown with vegetation and damaged by a major storm, but has now been cleaned up and replanted with wildflowers, trees, and shrubs.
Eco Park’s Purpose
Eco Park aims to educate beach visitors about wildlife and climate change. Along the boardwalk, signs explain the importance of caring for the land and the impact of climate change. City leaders hope that visitors will take the time to read the signs and learn about the area.
The project was made possible by state funding secured by Mayor Dorinda Borer when she was a state representative. The funding paid for the 16,000 plants that are now in the ground. The revitalization of the entire shoreline is something the city has been working on for years.
By the end of the summer, the empty Savin Rock conference center is set to become a restaurant and event venue, and apartments are set to replace the Debonair Beach Motel. The restaurant Riva will also be welcoming patrons for a second summer.
