The Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg is hosting a conversation between Chicago artist Yvette Mayorga and Senior Curator of Contemporary Art Katherine Pill. The discussion will center on Mayorga’s new installation, Goddesses of the Great Hall, which is part of the “Art Unbound” series.
Art Unbound Series
The “Art Unbound” series is a reimagining of works from the museum’s permanent collections in new ways, and in new spaces, and with new additions. Starting this fall, the interpretations will change, with wall labels written by a variety of voices, not just curatorial, and the galleries will be entirely thematic.
Central to the “Great Hall” installation is a 1799 painting, “Julie as Flora, Roman Goddess of Flowers” by Élisabeth Vigée-LeBrun, which Mayorga has interpreted with her own collage piece, “Portrait of the Artist After Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun.” The event is free with museum admission, although reservations are required.
Other Events
The Ibison Guitar Duo will perform in the Marly Room on June 24, and tickets are available. Additionally, the Tully-Levine Gallery will host a reception for multi-media artist Ashley Rivers’ exhibition on June 27, which includes an environmentally-sound activity.
