Santa Barbara County Targets High Fire Zones

Santa Barbara County, California, has started an aggressive schedule to clear brush and reduce fire dangers in high-risk areas. A month-long project began this week in Mission Canyon, a densely populated area with limited access.

Fire Prevention Efforts

The Santa Barbara County Fire Safe Council is coordinating the brush clearing work, which includes creating a year-round defensible space in designated neighborhoods. Residents are responsible for cutting the vegetation, and a contractor will chip it on-site and take it away.

The project is part of a larger effort to reduce fire risks in the area, which includes the Botanic Gardens and homes near Rocky Nook Park and the Old Mission. The community has received notices and a presentation at a recent town hall meeting on fire prevention.
