US Temperature Records

The World Meteorological Organization confirmed 2025 was among the hottest years on record. Extreme heat events continue to be a regular occurrence, with a heat wave across the southwestern US in March 2026 sending temperatures soaring to record highs in Arizona and Southern California.

State Records

Stacker consulted 2023 data from NOAA’s State Climate Extremes Committee to identify the hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in each state and Puerto Rico. Each state’s all-time highest and lowest temperatures are listed below.

Alabama’s all-time highest temperature was 112 F in Centerville on Sept. 6, 1925, while its all-time lowest temperature was -27 F in New Market on Jan. 30, 1966.

Alaska’s all-time highest temperature was 100 F in Fort Yukon on June 27, 1915, and its all-time lowest temperature was -80 F in Prospect Creek Camp on Jan. 23, 1971.

Arizona’s all-time highest temperature was 128 F in Lake Havasu City on June 29, 1994, and its all-time lowest temperature was -40 F in Hawley Lake on Jan. 7, 1971.

Other states’ records are also listed, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, and Georgia.
