Alan Shoemaker: Friday morning forecast

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Strong winds could reach 55 mph across much of New Mexico this afternoon as a cold front raises wildfire risk and brings a freeze to northern areas overnight.

Windy conditions ahead of the front will raise the wildfire risk, especially across most of eastern New Mexico.

The front will move from the northwest to the southeast, keeping the Four Corners cooler while southeastern parts of the state stay warm longer. By around 1 p.m., the front should move into central New Mexico.

Sunshine should stay in place for most of the day with a few high clouds possible in the morning, but winds will stay gusty through the evening before easing off.

Freeze warnings run from midnight to 9 a.m. across most of northern New Mexico. Even outside that warned area, temperatures will still turn cold and hover near freezing.

Low temperatures overnight will drop into the 20s and 30s from central New Mexico north, with teens in the northern mountains. The Albuquerque metro may stay just above freezing, but areas outside town could dip below freezing.

Southern New Mexico will stay warm and windy Friday with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Roswell could reach the 80s before turning about 15 degrees colder Saturday.
