Parque Zaragoza Bathhouse Renovated

The city of Austin has unveiled the renovated Parque Zaragoza Bathhouse, a landmark 90 years in the making. The renovated structure includes an ADA-compliant layout with modern restrooms and shower facilities, a lifeguard office, a dedicated pool entry, and a large enclosed pavilion for activities.

The upgrades are a practical leap forward for aquatic staff and the community. Juan Hernandez, aquatic maintenance supervisor for the south district, said the renovations provide a place where people can use the restrooms without having to rent porta-potties. Local artist Samson Barboza’s stainless steel sculpture, ‘Brown Birds’ and ‘Grackle,’ was installed as part of the project, reflecting the spirit and history of the place.

Aquatic staff will offer free Swim Safe swim lessons for children in kindergarten through third grade at Parque Zaragoza Pool. More information is available at the city’s website.

History of Parque Zaragoza

Parque Zaragoza has been a part of East Austin’s Mexican and Mexican American community since 1931. The city purchased the land for the park after years of lobbying by cultural advocacy groups. In 1941, residents built a two-room brick bathhouse, which served as the park’s only indoor facility for 65 years.

The latest renovation was funded by the 2012 and 2018 Park and Recreation Bond Funds. The park is located at 2611 Webberville Road, Austin, and more information can be found on the city’s website.
