A tragic accident occurred in Lakeland, Florida, early Thursday morning, resulting in the death of a 61-year-old local man. The man, identified as Paul Greenberg, was driving a grey Toyota Prius when it drove into a retention pond.
According to investigators, the car was driving east on the grassy shoulder near the property entrance at 2600 County Line Road. For reasons that are still unclear, the driver slowly backed up into a concrete Lakeland Electric pole. The car then pulled forward, rolled down an embankment, and went straight into the water.
When police, Polk County Fire Rescue, and the Lakeland Fire Department arrived, the Prius was completely submerged. The police department’s dive team was called in to pull the car from the pond. Inside, they found the driver, deceased.
Detectives are still looking into exactly what led to the crash, but preliminary evidence shows no signs of foul play. The investigation is still open and active. Police are asking anyone who might have additional information about the incident to email investigating Officer Matthew Hermann.
