Rigby Private School Incorporates Farm Chores

A new private school in Rigby, Idaho, is taking a unique approach to education by incorporating farm chores into its daily routine. Rooted Meadows, a Waldorf-inspired school, is set to open this fall and will provide a hands-on learning experience for its students. The school’s founder, Rachael Sparhawk, was inspired by the Waldorf teaching style, which emphasizes creativity, practical skills, and child development.

Waldorf Education

The Waldorf approach was developed by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner and is based on the idea that effective learning engages the body, mind, and soul. Students at Rooted Meadows will start their day with half an hour of farm chores, including a song to begin the day. The school’s curriculum is designed to align with the students’ developmental stages, and will include hands-on activities such as knitting, sewing, and weaving.

The school’s goal is to help students develop into responsible and caring individuals who can make a positive impact in their communities. Sparhawk believes that the Waldorf approach will provide students with a strong foundation for future success, and will help them develop critical thinking, creativity, and independence.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite the challenges of starting a new private school, Sparhawk is optimistic about the future of Rooted Meadows. The school has already enrolled 10 students, and there is room for 20 more. The tuition for the first year is $7,200, but the state’s private school tax credit will help offset the cost for many families. Sparhawk is still raising funds for a permanent facility and is searching for a building to rent for the first year.

Rooted Meadows is not the only Waldorf-inspired school in Idaho. There are two Waldorf charter schools in the state, and Sparhawk hopes to connect with other families who are interested in this approach to education. The school’s website provides more information on the curriculum, tuition, and application process.
