A Republican senator has warned that Democrats’ approach to immigration is driven by political self-interest and will destroy the country. Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., argued that the Democrats’ ‘suicidal empathy’ on immigration will lead to the downfall of Western civilization.

Schmitt’s provision, which was included in the House-passed funding package, would provide $350 million for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to arrest criminal illegal aliens after their release from state or local custody. This comes as law enforcement in sanctuary states and cities continue to refuse to cooperate with federal officials.

Schmitt warned that failing to deport illegal aliens is a threat to the West itself. He stated that being in the country illegally is justification enough for deportation, even without committing a violent crime.

The senator’s successful provision and the larger debate on the funding bill come as criminal illegal aliens continue to make headlines. Recently, four members of a Venezuelan street gang pleaded guilty to murdering two Americans, and another illegal alien was sentenced to 25 years in prison for raping and impregnating a 12-year-old girl in Missouri.
