Broadway Celebrates as ‘Schmigadoon!’ and ‘Liberation’ Win Big at Tony Awards

The Tony Awards, a celebration of Broadway’s finest, saw ‘Schmigadoon!’ and ‘Liberation’ take home top honors. ‘Schmigadoon!’, an adaptation of an Apple TV series, won the best new musical Tony Award. The show, which humorously parodies classic Broadway musicals, is a triumph for creator Cinco Paul, who also received Tonys for the score and book after the TV series was canceled.

Producer Lorne Michaels, known for ‘Saturday Night Live,’ expressed the joy of the win, highlighting the simple pleasures of singing, dancing, and happy endings. This victory also marks a ‘studio EGOT’ for Apple, having won major awards across all four entertainment categories.

‘Liberation,’ a play by Bess Wohl, won the best new play award. The play, set in 1970s Ohio, explores themes of feminism and societal change. Wohl’s work has been recognized with a Pulitzer Prize for drama earlier this year, making her only the fourth woman to win a best play Tony.

Arthur Miller’s ‘Death of a Salesman’ won best play revival, adding to its legacy of Tony wins. Laurie Metcalf and Nathan Lane starred in this revival, which also won awards for lighting, scenic design, and sound design. Joe Mantello was honored as best director for a play.

‘Ragtime’ won the best musical revival, with Caissie Levy and Joshua Henry receiving accolades for their performances. Levy, known for her role as Elsa in ‘Frozen,’ thanked those who supported her dual roles as a mother and performer.

John Lithgow made history by winning best lead actor in a play for ‘Giant,’ portraying Roald Dahl. At 80, Lithgow is the oldest man to win a competitive acting Tony, joining an elite group of actors with wins in three separate categories.

The event also celebrated diversity and inclusion, with ‘Cats: The Jellicle Ball’ winning best direction of a musical. The production reimagines the classic musical as a celebration of queer ballroom culture, honoring its pioneers.

Hosted by Pink, the Tony Awards featured memorable performances and tributes, including a powerful In Memoriam section led by Leslie Odom Jr. The night was a testament to the enduring spirit and creativity of the theater community.
