Magic Mushroom Products Found in Colorado Gas Stations Raise Health Concerns

In Aurora, Colorado, local authorities are raising alarms about the presence of PolkaDot-branded chocolate bars in gas stations, which have been found to contain illegal psychoactive substances. This discovery follows a similar incident in California, where over $3 million worth of these products were destroyed after tests revealed synthetic drugs.

Public Health Concerns

The Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment, in collaboration with Denver Licensing and Consumer Protection, has taken action to remove these products from several retailers. They have partnered with the Denver Police Department to ensure the destruction of similar items from additional locations.

Jessica Davis, a food and cannabis investigator in Denver, highlighted the issue of false labeling, which misleads both retailers and consumers. The bars, marketed as containing non-hallucinogenic mushrooms, were found to contain psilocybin and psilocin, along with other synthetic tryptamines.

Legal Confusion

The confusion surrounding these products is partly due to Colorado’s 2022 Natural Medicine Act, which decriminalized personal possession and use of certain natural psychedelics. However, retail sales of these substances remain illegal. Despite this, some retailers mistakenly believe that all mushroom-related products are permissible.

Consumer Education and Enforcement

The Denver health department is focusing on educating both consumers and retailers. They advise against purchasing PolkaDot products and encourage reporting sightings to local authorities. Retailers are being coached on due diligence practices to avoid carrying illegal products.

Authorities emphasize that while the state is developing a system for supervised use of psychedelics for mental health, unsupervised retail sales at places like gas stations are not permitted. Consumers are urged to seek natural medicines safely and legally.
