The Las Cruces Public School District is in the process of reviewing proposed changes to its student dress code policy. The second reading of these changes took place during the Board of Education meeting on June 2. The proposed policy aims to ensure that students’ personal styles do not interfere with health or safety and do not create a hostile environment.
Proposed Changes to the Dress Code
Key changes in the proposed policy include prohibiting clothing, jewelry, or accessories that are pornographic, promote violence or illegal activity, expose undergarments, are shorter than three inches above the knee, or do not fully cover the chest, back, stomach, buttocks, and genitals. Items not intended for school wear, such as flip flops, house shoes, and pajamas, are also prohibited. Additionally, clothing that promotes gang affiliation or covers a student’s face, except for religious or medical reasons, is not allowed.
The policy also allows schools to establish additional attire requirements when necessary. However, schools with existing uniform policies can continue with their current dress codes. Religious attire remains excluded from these restrictions, respecting students’ rights to express their faith.
Community Engagement
To better understand the impact of these changes on families, the district has scheduled a series of virtual listening sessions. These sessions will be held on June 8 and 9, targeting different high schools and their feeder schools, allowing parents and guardians to voice their opinions and concerns.
The district emphasizes the importance of community feedback in shaping a dress code policy that respects individual expression while maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment for all students.
