Drew Rasmussen delivered an outstanding performance on the mound, allowing only one hit over seven innings as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Miami Marlins 6-0 on Friday night. Rasmussen, who improved his record to 5-2, struck out a season-high nine batters and retired 17 consecutive hitters after conceding an early single to Javier Sanoja.
Junior Caminero was a standout at the plate, reaching base five times with a double, two walks, and a single. This marked the second time this season that Caminero achieved such a feat, following his performance on opening day against St. Louis.
The Rays’ offense was further bolstered by Cedric Mullings, who hit a home run, and Ryan Vilade, who contributed two hits and two RBIs. Yandy Díaz added three singles to the team’s 12-hit effort.
Game Highlights
The Rays made an early impact against Marlins starter Ryan Gusto, with Richie Palacios hitting a two-run triple and scoring on Vilade’s single in the first inning. The lead was extended to 4-0 in the fifth inning with an RBI single from Jonathan Aranda. Mullings’ homer in the sixth and another RBI single from Vilade in the seventh sealed the Rays’ victory.
Cam Booser and Cole Sulser provided solid relief pitching, with Booser handling the eighth inning and Sulser closing the game in the ninth, allowing just one hit between them.
Chandler Simpson, the Rays’ outfielder, left the game in the third inning due to left thumb discomfort, with Victor Mesa Jr. taking his place.
Looking ahead, the Rays will send LHP Shane McLanahan to the mound on Saturday, facing off against RHP Lake Bachar of the Marlins.
