In San Luis Obispo, California, Cal Poly supporters came together on Friday morning to rally behind the Mustangs baseball team as they played the most significant game in the program’s 32-year Division I history. The team, having secured both the Big West Conference regular season and tournament championships, faced off against 16th-ranked West Virginia in their first NCAA Super Regional.
Community Support
To mark this historic occasion, the university hosted a watch party at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex near the Mott Athletics Center. Fans gathered to watch the game, which took place approximately 2,600 miles away in Morgantown, West Virginia, on a large outdoor screen broadcasting the ESPN2 coverage.
Ava Doyle, a Cal Poly softball player, expressed her excitement, saying, “It’s a nice sunny day. It’s a lot of fun being out here and supporting the team. I’m happy to be here.” Despite the team’s struggle on the field, with West Virginia leading 11-2 in the 8th inning, the event was a testament to the community’s spirit and support for their team.
University Pride
Cal Poly graduate Andy Svercheck highlighted the importance of the event, stating, “It’s great exposure for Cal Poly. Alumni from Cal Poly, we know how great the school is and how great our athletic teams are. We’re always tough. Better than you expect, and it’s great for the rest of the country to see that this is a great place to go to school, a great place to live and raise a family. The Cal Poly experience is unique.”
For the university and its supporters, the game represented more than just a sporting event; it was an opportunity to showcase the strength and unity of the Cal Poly community on a national stage.
