Mayor Parker and Governor Shapiro condemn Boycott Bike Ride targeting Rittenhouse restaurants

Philadelphia police reported three arrests early Sunday as a “Boycott Bike Ride” moved through the city, targeting six Jewish-owned restaurants near Rittenhouse Square. Organizers, including the group Philly Bike On Your Left, posted a flyer on social media that circled the establishments in red and crossed them out, accusing the owners of supporting Israel and labeling them as Zionists while claiming solidarity with Palestinians.

City officials respond

Mayor Cherelle Parker said the Philadelphia Police Department would be fully prepared to maintain safety throughout the protest. “We will not tolerate hate or intimidation against any of our city’s businesses or residents,” Parker said in a statement released earlier this week.

Governor Josh Shapiro joined the mayor in condemning the demonstration, calling it “an unacceptable act of bigotry that has no place in Pennsylvania.” State and local leaders echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that peaceful protest is a constitutional right, but that it must not cross the line into harassment or threats.

Details of the protest

The ride began Saturday afternoon, with cyclists wearing signs that read, “Stand with Palestine” and “Boycott Zionist businesses.” The flyer circulated online listed the six targeted restaurants, all of which are owned by members of the Jewish community. Police officers stationed near the businesses reported that a small group of participants attempted to block entrances and shouted accusations at the owners.

Philadelphia Police Department spokesperson Officer Maria Hernandez confirmed that three individuals were taken into custody for disorderly conduct and harassment. All three were released on bail pending further investigation.

Community reaction

Local business owners expressed concern over the targeting of specific establishments based on the owners’ religious background. “We run a family restaurant that has served this neighborhood for years,” said one owner who asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons. “We want to be part of this community, not a target of hate.”

Faith leaders from both the Jewish and Christian communities met on Sunday to discuss ways to promote mutual respect and dialogue. Reverend Thomas Greene of the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia emphasized the importance of protecting religious liberty while allowing lawful protest. “Our Constitution guarantees free speech, but it also protects the right of every citizen to worship without intimidation,” Greene said.

Legal perspective

Legal experts note that while the First Amendment protects peaceful protest, it does not shield actions that constitute harassment or threats. Attorney Laura Mitchell, a constitutional law professor at the University of Pennsylvania, warned that “targeted intimidation of business owners based on religion can cross the line into unlawful conduct.”

The city’s Office of Civil Rights is reviewing the incident to determine whether any civil rights violations occurred. Officials said they will work with the police department to ensure that future demonstrations remain peaceful and respectful of all Philadelphians.

Looking ahead

Mayor Parker and Governor Shapiro have pledged to increase outreach to community groups to prevent similar incidents. The mayor’s office announced plans for a town‑hall meeting next month to address concerns about hate‑motivated protests and to reinforce the city’s commitment to religious freedom and public safety.

Police continue to monitor the situation around the targeted restaurants and have increased patrols in the Rittenhouse Square area. Residents are encouraged to report any further harassment or threats to the Philadelphia Police Department’s non‑emergency line.
