Gonzaga bulldogs dominate NMSU in 109-68 win at McCarthey Center

In a stark second‑half display, the Gonzaga Bulldogs took a modest five‑point halftime lead and turned it into a 109‑68 victory over New Mexico State on Saturday at the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane, Wash. The win moves Gonzaga to 2‑0 on the road while the Aggies fall to 1‑1.

First half kept NMSU within reach

Mark Lavrenov led the Aggies with 19 points, shooting five of 11 from the field and converting nine of ten free throws. He added 12 points before the break, and his teammates DJ Dudley and Jae’Coby Osborne each contributed 10 points. NMSU shot an efficient 55.6% from the field and made all nine of its free‑throw attempts, allowing the team to stay within striking distance of the ranked Bulldogs.

Gonzaga entered halftime trailing 47‑42, but the Bulldogs quickly seized momentum. After a brief Aggie surge that cut the deficit to 40‑37, Lavrenov’s two free throws at the end of the half left the score at 47‑42 in Gonzaga’s favor.

Bulldogs explode in the second half

Gonzaga opened the second half with an eight‑point run, then extended the lead with a series of fast‑break baskets. Isiah Harwell and Davis Fogle each scored 22 points, while Braden Huff added 20. The Bulldogs shot an impressive 61.8% after the break and out‑scored the Aggies 62‑26 in the half.

Turnovers proved decisive. NMSU committed 19 turnovers, which Gonzaga converted into 36 points. The Bulldogs protected the ball, turning it over only six times and earning a 20‑4 advantage in fast‑break points.

Statistical highlights

  • Gonzaga finished shooting 61.3% overall and made 13 of 24 three‑point attempts.
  • New Mexico State shot 43.8% overall and was 4‑for‑14 from beyond the arc.
  • The Aggies excelled at the free‑throw line, hitting 22 of 24 attempts (91.7%).
  • Osborne and Adrame Diongue each grabbed five rebounds for NMSU; Gabe Pickens recorded five of the Aggies’ six assists.

Implications for the season

Gonzaga’s dominant performance underscores its offensive firepower and defensive discipline, reinforcing its status as a top‑25 program early in the season. The Bulldogs’ ability to convert turnovers into points and control the tempo will be a key factor as they continue their non‑conference schedule.

For New Mexico State, the loss highlights areas for improvement, particularly ball security and second‑half adjustments. Lavrenov’s scoring effort shows promise, but the team will need to limit turnovers and improve perimeter shooting to compete with elite opponents.

Both programs will look to build on Saturday’s outcomes as they prepare for upcoming matchups. Gonzaga aims to maintain its winning streak, while NMSU hopes to rebound and tighten its play in the weeks ahead.
