Democrats across the nation have been canvassing, handing out flyers and making phone calls this fall. Their hard work paid off on Tuesday, delivering a Democratic majority in both the House and the Senate for the first time since 2022. While the victory is worth celebrating, it also brings a serious responsibility.
Use Congressional Power, Don’t Just Protect It
House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer must remember that their constituents sent them to act, not merely to safeguard a partisan edge. The first priority should be a decisive stance on the conflict in Gaza. The administration’s continued financial support for bombs, bulldozers and other equipment used against civilians must end. Congress has the sole tool to cut that funding.
Seek Accountability for the Iran School Strike
On February 28, an American strike hit an elementary school in Minab, Iran, killing more than 100 children and teachers. The Pentagon has yet to release a full investigation, and the administration has not formally acknowledged the tragedy. While Congress cannot speak for the President, it can speak for the American people by passing a resolution apologizing to the victims’ families and demanding a transparent, subpoenaed investigation.
Support Our Service‑Members and Their Families
Every family that lost a service member in the Iran conflict should be assigned a personal advocate to navigate benefits and paperwork. Likewise, wounded service members deserve treatment by the nation’s top medical specialists, with the government covering all costs for as long as needed. No veteran should have to fight bureaucracy for the care they earned.
Finish the Epstein Investigation
Congress passed a law last year ordering the release of the Epstein files. What was delivered were heavily redacted documents with large blacked‑out sections. The public deserves a full, unredacted release that protects victims’ identities, and the Justice Department must pursue criminal charges against anyone shown to have abused children, regardless of wealth or connections.
Advance a Pro‑Family Domestic Agenda
With a Democratic majority, it is time to put universal health care on the floor and require every member to state their position. Real action on student debt and the predatory loan system that creates it is also essential. The influence of AIPAC and related PACs must be curbed; leaders should publicly commit to refusing further military aid to Israel until a fair peace process is in place.
Hold President Trump Accountable, Not Veto‑Proof
President Trump still holds the veto power. Democrats should challenge him to use it against any health‑care or debt‑relief legislation they oppose, forcing Republicans to explain their alignment with the President in 2028.
Local Voters Expect Results
Voters in Kansas, Texas, Ohio and elsewhere gave Democrats a chance this year. The party now has two years to deliver on those promises. The HyperLocal Loop will continue to monitor how Congress uses its new power to protect families, uphold the Constitution, and honor the sacrifices of our service members.
