Capitol Christmas Tree to Stop in Sheridan on Nov. 9

City Administrator Stu McRae announced that the 2026 Capitol Christmas Tree, harvested from the Nez Perce‑Clearwater National Forest in Idaho, will pause in Sheridan on Monday, November 9. The tree will be positioned in the parking lot of the Katy Building for the day, giving residents a chance to see the iconic fir before it continues its journey to the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.

Details of the Sheridan stop

According to McRae, the tree will arrive in Sheridan early in the morning and remain on display throughout the day. In the evening, city crews will move the tree to a secure service center where it will be protected overnight. The stop is part of a larger tradition that brings the Capitol’s holiday centerpiece from the Pacific Northwest to Washington, D.C., each year.

Why the stop matters to Sheridan

Sheridan residents will have a unique opportunity to view a piece of national history without leaving town. The tree’s presence highlights the city’s role in supporting national traditions and provides a festive backdrop for families and community groups planning holiday activities. Local churches and schools have already expressed interest in organizing photo opportunities and short gatherings around the tree.

Community response

Many community members welcomed the news on social media, noting that the tree will add a special touch to the city’s holiday season. “It’s wonderful to have a piece of the Capitol right here in Sheridan,” said longtime resident Mary Jensen. “Our kids will love seeing it and it brings a sense of unity and pride to our town.”

Logistics and safety

The city has coordinated with the U.S. Capitol Police and local law‑enforcement agencies to ensure a smooth and safe transition. Traffic flow around the Katy Building will be managed with temporary signage, and parking will be limited to allow clear access for the tree and its support crew. Residents are asked to follow posted directions and avoid blocking the area.

Looking ahead

After its Sheridan stop, the tree will continue its journey eastward, traveling by truck to Washington, D.C., where it will be installed on the West Lawn for the national holiday celebrations. The tradition dates back to 1971 and has become a symbol of the nation’s holiday spirit.

City officials encourage anyone interested in learning more about the tree’s route or volunteering for related events to contact the city’s public‑information office. Additional details will be posted on the city’s website and social‑media channels in the coming days.
