Spike Gjerde Left Woodberry. Artifact Has Its Own Story

You pull up to a converted rowhouse on Park Heights Avenue and check the address twice. The neighborhood is quieter than you expected, the foot traffic light, and from the outside Citron & Rose gives almost nothing away — a small sign, warm light behind the windows, the low murmur of a dining room getting started. This is Pikesville territory, technically, though city-proper Baltimore is right there in the rearview. You go in.

The place opened in 2017 as a kosher fine-dining restaurant, which in Baltimore felt like a genuine bet. Kosher fine dining is a narrow lane to run in — the ingredient restrictions are real, the clientele demanding, and the margin for cutting corners nonexistent. What chef-owner Josh Fidler built here is a menu that refuses to treat those constraints as an excuse. It reads like it belongs in a serious American bistro: handmade pastas, wood-grilled proteins, vegetable preparations that look like someone spent real time on them.

Start with the mushroom bruschetta if it’s on the menu. The fungi are layered and funky, the toast substantial enough to hold them. Order the beet salad with citrus and you’ll understand where the name is pulling from — that combination shows up in a few forms throughout the meal and it works every time, brightness cutting through earthiness. The handmade pastas rotate but tend toward the deeply savory: short ribs, braised lamb, things that have been cooking for hours before they hit your table.

Service is attentive without hovering. The room seats maybe sixty and fills up on weekends, so a reservation is worth making. Tables are close but not claustrophobic, and the noise level stays low enough that conversation doesn’t require leaning in. The wine list is kosher throughout — a category that has genuinely improved over the past decade — and the staff can walk you through it without condescension.

Expect to spend somewhere in the $60–$90 range per person with drinks and a couple of courses. That’s not cheap, but it’s not out of line for the execution. This is not the place to skip dessert. The chocolate offerings in particular tend to be rich without tipping into excess, and anything involving citrus and something creamy will round out the meal cleanly.

What makes Citron & Rose stand out beyond its niche is that it succeeds on the terms that matter to anyone who cares about food: the cooking is careful, the sourcing is thoughtful, and the kitchen isn’t coasting on novelty. The kosher designation brings a specific audience, but the restaurant earns repeat visits from people who don’t observe at all — and that’s the more instructive fact.

If you’re heading out on a Friday, keep the Shabbat calendar in mind. Citron & Rose closes before sundown on Fridays and stays closed Saturday, reopening Sunday. Check their hours before you go, particularly around holidays. The website is reliably current. When you do get a table, give yourself a full two hours. This is not a quick dinner. That’s the point.
