Wylie Panthers fall to Duncanville in dramatic four-set area playoff

Wylie’s senior‑heavy volleyball squad saw its remarkable 35‑6 season conclude on Tuesday night in a high‑stakes Class 6A Division I area‑round matchup against the Duncanville Lady Pirates. The contest unfolded at Forney High School, drawing a lively crowd of parents, alumni, and community supporters.

Early sets showcase back‑and‑forth battle

Duncanville opened strongly, taking the first set 25‑15 after a quick surge. Wylie answered in kind, rallying to a 12‑12 tie before pulling away for a 25‑19 victory that evened the match at one set apiece. The third set belonged to the Lady Pirates, who never relinquished a 5‑2 lead and closed it out 25‑13, putting them ahead 2‑1.

Fourth‑set drama and a comeback

Facing elimination, Wylie surged early in the fourth, building an 11‑3 advantage that suggested a potential fifth set. However, Duncanville responded with a series of scoring runs, narrowing the gap to 14‑11 before Wylie called a timeout. The Pirates continued to apply pressure, eventually turning a 15‑23 deficit into a 25‑17 set win, sealing the comeback and the match.

Coach Olivares praises effort and senior leadership

Wylie head coach Sherry Olivares commended her team’s grit, noting, “They were the better team tonight. I’m proud of the girls’ grit and determination.” She highlighted senior contributions, especially senior libero Jolene Bao, who recorded a career‑high 25 digs and eight assists, and senior Julia Hudgins, who led the Panthers with 11 kills. Senior Keelyn Green posted a near triple‑double with eight kills, 24 digs, and 14 assists.

Returning from injury, senior Aubrey DeGrate delivered a strong performance with 10 kills, two digs, and one block, marking her best outing in two months. Olivares added, “We gave 110% effort; you can’t ask for any more than that.”

Implications for the postseason

The loss ends Wylie’s impressive run, while Duncanville improves to 41‑4 and advances to the regional semifinals. Both programs entered the match as district champions, each boasting an undefeated 14‑0 league record.

Despite the disappointment, Olivares emphasized the team’s resilience: “We didn’t give up, we didn’t give in, and I appreciate our grit and grind.” The Panthers will now turn their focus to graduating seniors and preparing for the next season, confident that the experience gained will serve the program well.

For fans and families who supported the Panthers throughout the season, the match serves as a reminder of the dedication and community spirit that high‑school athletics bring to the Wylie area.
