Dinner at Rebele Puts New Focus on the Texas Gulf Coast

Grab a table on the patio if you can. That’s the first thing any regular will tell you about Meadow Neighborhood Eatery, the low-key spot on North St. Mary’s that draws a steady crowd of Olmos Park and Monte Vista residents who’ve quietly made it their own. The patio string lights, the sound of the neighborhood settling into evening, the smell of whatever’s coming off the wood fire inside — it sets the tone before you’ve even opened the menu.

Meadow occupies a converted bungalow on the northern stretch of St. Mary’s Strip, away from the bar-heavy blocks closer to downtown. The place seats maybe sixty people total, patio included, and it feels more like a dinner party that got a liquor license than a proper restaurant. The staff knows regulars by name. First-timers get the same treatment within about five minutes.

Chef John Russ, who also runs Clementine nearby, built the menu around seasonal Texas produce and straightforward technique — no foam, no tableside theatrics, just well-sourced ingredients handled with care. The menu shifts frequently enough that you should check before you go, but a few things tend to anchor it. The roasted beet salad with whipped goat cheese and candied pepitas shows up reliably and earns its repeat appearances. The wood-roasted chicken, when it’s on, is the kind of dish that makes you wonder why you ever order anything else anywhere. Portions are generous without being aggressive about it.

Prices land in the moderate-to-upscale range for San Antonio — entrees generally run $22 to $36, with starters between $12 and $18. It’s not a casual weeknight place for everyone, but it’s also not trying to be a special-occasion temple. The vibe is somewhere in between: dressy enough that you’ll feel good showing up in a nice shirt, relaxed enough that nobody cares if you skip dessert and linger over wine instead.

The wine list leans toward smaller producers, mostly European with some California representation. If you’re not sure what to order, ask — the servers actually know the list rather than just reading from it. Cocktails are solid without being the main event. The beer selection is short but well-chosen.

Reservations are worth making, especially Thursday through Saturday. The patio fills up fast once the weather cooperates, which in San Antonio means roughly October through May. Summer evenings can still work if you’re indoors, where the dining room is dim and cool and the noise level stays manageable for conversation.

Parking requires a little patience. Street spots on St. Mary’s turn over, and there’s a small lot nearby, but plan to walk a block or two. It’s the kind of neighborhood where that feels normal rather than annoying — there’s a wine shop a few doors down if you want to kill time before your table is ready.

What makes Meadow worth a specific trip rather than just a convenient neighborhood dinner is that it cooks with real conviction. San Antonio has plenty of places that are perfectly fine. Meadow is one of the places that makes you glad you live here, or glad you came.
