The city of Rogers, Arkansas, recently celebrated a significant milestone in its local history with the unveiling of a historical marker at the site of the first Walmart store. Located at 719 W. Walnut St., this store marked the beginning of what would become the world’s largest retailer by revenue.
The event was part of the America250 Commission’s initiative to recognize sites of historical importance in Arkansas as the state approaches its 250th anniversary. State officials, Walmart employees, and community leaders gathered to honor the store’s legacy and its role in shaping both the local community and the global retail landscape.
Shea Lewis from the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism highlighted the store’s lasting impact, stating, “You can’t think of Arkansas and not think of Walmart.” The Rogers location was the testing ground for founder Sam Walton’s innovative discount retail model, which focused on everyday low prices, a concept that would revolutionize the retail industry.
Gerard Dehrmann of Walmart Public Affairs emphasized the store’s pivotal role in proving this retail model, which brought affordable prices to communities across the nation. “This store had a monumental task,” Dehrmann said. “It proved a concept across the country and brought everyday low prices to people who otherwise wouldn’t have access.”
Rogers Mayor Greg Hines spoke about the significance of the marker, noting that it serves as a reminder of Walmart’s local roots and its global influence. “When you think about the impact Walmart has had on the world, to come here and acknowledge that history and put it in a permanent form is great for the community,” Hines remarked.
The historical marker is part of a broader effort to preserve the history of significant sites in Arkansas. Other locations being recognized include Petit Jean State Park, the Quapaw Treaty of 1824, and the Daisy Bates House, among others. These markers aim to educate the public about the rich history of the state and its contributions to the nation.
As Walmart continues to inspire its employees and the community, the historical marker at the original store site stands as a testament to the company’s humble beginnings and its journey to becoming a retail giant. The recognition of this site not only honors the past but also inspires future generations to appreciate the local history that has shaped their community.
