Walnut St., this store marked the beginning of what would become the world’s largest retailer by revenue.
The event was part of the America250 Commission’s initiative to recognize sites of historical importance in Arkansas as the state approaches its 250th anniversary. State officials, Walmart employees, and community leaders gathered to honor the store’s legacy and its role in shaping both the local community and the global retail landscape.
Shea Lewis from the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism highlighted the store’s lasting impact, stating, “You can’t think of Arkansas and not think of Walmart.” The Rogers location was the testing ground for founder Sam Walton’s innovative discount retail model, which focused on everyday low prices, a concept that would revolutionize the retail industry.

Other locations being recognized include Petit Jean State Park, the Quapaw Treaty of 1824, and the Daisy Bates House, among others.
