Melinda French Gates Pledges $215 Million for Women’s Health Initiatives

Philanthropist Melinda French Gates has announced a significant expansion of her philanthropic efforts, pledging $215 million to improve women’s health worldwide. This new funding will support initiatives such as contraceptive access, maternal care, and research into menopause, particularly for middle-aged women.

Strategic Philanthropy for Women’s Health

French Gates, who operates through her organization Pivotal, has now donated over $600 million to women’s health in the past two years. Her approach has become more strategic since she stepped away from The Gates Foundation in 2024, focusing on areas she believes are underfunded.

The recent funding includes a $40 million donation to Co-Impact, aimed at integrating mental health support into maternal and primary care, with a special focus on Africa. Additionally, a $10 million donation to The Menopause Society seeks to improve menopause care in the United States by educating healthcare practitioners and expanding outreach in underserved areas.

Addressing Funding Gaps

According to the World Economic Forum, health issues specifically affecting women receive only 2% of private healthcare funds, despite women comprising half the population. French Gates aims to address these disparities by highlighting neglected societal problems and encouraging other donors and government funding to follow suit.

Dr. Stephanie Faubion, medical director of The Menopause Society, emphasized the critical need for such funding, noting that many U.S. counties lack access to menopause-competent clinicians. She highlighted the importance of French Gates’ donation in raising awareness and motivating further action.

French Gates expressed her desire for women’s health issues to gain visibility, stating, “I want women’s health issues to not be invisible. I want them to be seen for what they’re going through, their real life experiences, and have those issues addressed so they can live their very best lives.”
