Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg, Pennsylvania, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, maintaining its unique tradition of free admission. As the nation marks its 250th anniversary, this beloved park stands out for its commitment to affordability and family-friendly fun.
A Century of Tradition
Since opening on July 4, 1926, Knoebels has welcomed guests without charging an entrance fee, a rarity in today’s world of expensive theme parks. This model harks back to the early days of amusement parks, particularly ‘trolley parks,’ which generated revenue through rides, food, and drinks rather than admission fees.
Brian Knoebel, the current owner, emphasizes the importance of this tradition. ‘It’s who we are,’ he told PA Local. ‘That traditional park.’ Knoebel acknowledges that many visitors, especially grandparents, enjoy watching their grandchildren experience the rides, and the free admission model allows families on limited incomes to enjoy the park without financial strain.
Family Roots and Growth
The park’s history is deeply rooted in family values. Knoebel’s ancestors, who emigrated from Germany, initially established the park as a modest venture. ‘After church on Sunday, they’d come down and park their horse and buggy off to the side, and frolic in the stream and have a little picnic,’ Knoebel recounted. Over time, the park expanded, starting with a swimming pool, a restaurant, and a steam-powered carousel.
Today, Knoebels boasts 60 rides, 38 food stands, 24 games, and water slides, along with an 18-hole golf course. Despite its growth, the park retains its old-fashioned charm with shaded walkways and classic attractions.
Commitment to Community
Knoebels’ commitment to community and family is evident in its operations. Guests are encouraged to bring picnic lunches, and parking is free, making it accessible to all. Knoebel stated, ‘We know our fans, and that throwback amusement park from yesteryear is exactly who we continue to be.’
As Knoebels celebrates a century of operation, it remains the largest free-admission park in the United States, offering a unique and cherished experience for families seeking wholesome entertainment.
