At a Sept. 14 Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization meeting, a proposal to convert Parmer Lane between RM 1431 and MoPac into a four‑lane highway with extensive frontage roads sparked concern among neighbors and advocacy groups. In response, the Austin City Council approved a resolution directing staff to prioritize safety, walking, biking and transit in any future improvements, according to Community Impact.
Meanwhile, the City of Kyle approved an almost $500,000 reevaluation of six priority intersections that had previously been slated for roundabouts. The analysis, presented on Oct. 20, recommended roundabouts at two locations while suggesting alternative road remedies at the other four, Community Impact reported.
In Pflugerville, officials announced that demolition of the island median at the FM 685 and Main Street intersection will occur Oct. 26‑30. The work, part of the Downtown East project, includes installing a new traffic signal and extending Main Street northward. One northbound and one southbound lane will close nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with outside lanes remaining open, Community Impact noted.
Round Rock drivers gained a new north‑south route on Oct. 22 when the Wyoming Springs Drive extension opened, linking the road to East Old Settlers Boulevard and adding a bridge over Hairy Man Road. The project also introduced sidewalks, a shared‑use path and connections to the Brushy Creek Regional Trail, Community Impact said.
Further south, three Texas Department of Transportation projects along SH 71 in Bastrop County are progressing. The Pope Bend Road overpass has completed pre‑bidding requirements, with bids expected to open in Jan 2027. FM 1209 upgrades are in final design and right‑of‑way acquisition, while construction continues on the Tucker Hill Lane overpass and related frontage‑road improvements, Community Impact reported.
What’s next: Austin’s council will continue to review the Parmer Lane proposal with a focus on multimodal safety. The Kyle roundabout study results will guide future design decisions. Pflugerville’s median demolition wraps up by Oct. 30, after which traffic patterns will normalize. Round Rock’s Wyoming Springs Drive extension is now fully open, and residents can begin using the new trail connections. The Pope Bend Road overpass bids are slated for Jan 2027, marking the next major milestone for the SH 71 corridor.
