Steelers Extend Darnell Washington’s Contract for Four More Years

The Pittsburgh Steelers have reached an agreement with tight end Darnell Washington on a four-year contract extension worth $42 million, as reported by multiple media outlets. Washington, who has been a key player for the Steelers, will receive $21 million guaranteed under the new deal.

Washington’s Impact on the Steelers

At 24 years old, Washington is coming off the best season of his career. Drafted in the third round in 2023 from Georgia, he recorded career highs last season with 31 receptions and 364 receiving yards over 16 games, including 13 starts. Known for his imposing 6-foot-7, 264-pound frame, Washington has been a significant red-zone target, using his size to outmatch defenders.

First-year Steelers coach Mike McCarthy expressed his admiration for Washington, stating, “Love Darnell. He’s been here every day, classroom, good student. He’s a pro’s pro. I’ve been very, very impressed with him.” McCarthy highlighted Washington’s role in the team’s strategic adjustments, particularly involving tight ends.

Looking Ahead

Throughout his three seasons with the Steelers, Washington has accumulated 57 catches for 625 yards and two touchdowns in 50 games, with 29 starts. His extension comes alongside outside linebacker Nick Herbig’s four-year, $100 million extension, making them the first of the Steelers’ 2023 draft class to secure long-term deals this spring.

Herbig expressed his enthusiasm about the team’s future, saying, “I’d love to keep that whole class here. I think we got a bunch of dogs in there. I’m excited. I think some things (are) going to happen. I hope so.”
