Spokane’s ‘Wednesdays in the Woods’ Series Begins with Nature Education

The Riverside State Park Foundation in Spokane, Washington, has launched its annual ‘Wednesdays in the Woods’ series, a month-long event designed to educate the community about local wildlife and natural wonders. This series takes place every Wednesday evening in June from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bowl and Pitcher, a popular spot within the park.

Community Engagement with Nature

Mary Foutz, a board member of the Riverside State Park Foundation, emphasized the importance of these events in fostering a deeper appreciation for the park and its natural environment. ‘It’s really nice. It encourages people to get outside, appreciate the park, and learn some of the natural wonders that are out there,’ Foutz stated.

The series began with a presentation on trailside first aid and survival, led by a physician assistant. Upcoming topics include the first languages of the Spokane region, salamanders, and the distinction between native and non-native plant life in Spokane. These educational sessions are free to the public, although participants are required to purchase a Discover Pass to attend.

Encouraging Outdoor Learning

Foutz hopes that attendees will not only learn something new but also take the opportunity to disconnect from technology and immerse themselves in the natural beauty surrounding them. ‘Slow down, leave some tech behind and just really appreciate what nature’s given us and learn,’ she encouraged.

The ‘Wednesdays in the Woods’ series is a testament to the community’s commitment to environmental education and outdoor recreation, aligning with the foundation’s mission to support Riverside State Park and its activities.
