Revere’s Moroccan Community Rallies Behind National Soccer Team

The Moroccan community in Revere, Massachusetts, is abuzz with excitement as their national soccer team prepares to compete in the upcoming FIFA World Cup. This enthusiasm is a continuation of the fervor seen during Morocco’s historic 2022 World Cup run, where they became the first African team to reach the semifinals.

A Community United by Soccer

Casablanca House of Pastry, a local gathering spot, has become a hub for Moroccan fans. Nuaman Bhalla, a 22-year-old Moroccan-American, recalls the vibrant atmosphere during the last World Cup, with fans flooding local businesses and celebrating in the streets as Morocco advanced through the tournament.

Yassine Smissame, another passionate fan, emphasizes how soccer strengthens ties within Morocco and among Moroccans living abroad. “In some ways, it unifies the whole country,” he said, reflecting a culture deeply rooted in community and close relationships.

Local Celebrations and Watch Parties

Rachid Moukhabir, who is organizing watch parties in Revere, highlights Shirley Avenue as the heart of the community, where Moroccan stores and restaurants serve as gathering points. “Shirley Ave. is the place where a lot of Moroccans gather,” he noted.

This year, fans have the unique opportunity to watch Morocco play close to home, as the team is scheduled to face Scotland on June 19 at Boston Stadium in Foxboro. A watch party is planned at 141 Shirley Ave. in Revere, where large crowds are expected to cheer on their team.

A Passionate Fan Base

For many supporters, the chance to see their national team in person is a once-in-a-lifetime event. “I have never witnessed this in my entire life here in America,” Moukhabir said, expressing the significance of the occasion.

Moroccan fans are known for their passionate support, and as Moukhabir humorously pointed out, “Moroccans are loud without soccer. And when we are watching soccer, we just get louder.”

As the World Cup approaches, the Moroccan community in Revere is not just participating in the festivities; they are competing for the championship, embodying the phrase “Dima Maghreb,” meaning “always Morocco.”
