Historical Marker to Honor Original Walmart Site in Rogers, Arkansas

The original Walmart store, located at 719 West Walnut Street in Rogers, Arkansas, is set to receive a historical marker this Thursday. This dedication is part of a broader initiative by the Arkansas 250 Commission, which is installing 11 historical markers across the state to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.

Significance of the Original Walmart

Opened on July 2, 1962, the first Walmart store has played a pivotal role in the development of Rogers and the broader Northwest Arkansas region. The store’s establishment marked the beginning of what would become a global retail giant, deeply rooted in American entrepreneurial spirit and community values.

J.R. Shaw, director of Destination Rogers, emphasized the importance of this week for Walmart, as it coincides with the annual associates’ week. During this time, Walmart and Sam’s Club bring associates from around the world to Northwest Arkansas for their shareholders’ meeting and various celebrations. Shaw noted, “It’s a big, big deal for Rogers, for Northwest Arkansas, and for the state of Arkansas.”

Celebrating Community and Heritage

The dedication ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the original Walmart location. This event not only honors the historical significance of the site but also celebrates the community’s role in supporting and nurturing the growth of Walmart over the years.

The historical marker serves as a reminder of the impact that local businesses can have on their communities and the nation. As Walmart continues to be a major employer and economic driver in the region, the marker will stand as a testament to the enduring legacy of its humble beginnings in Rogers.
