FDA Warns Medline Again Over Quality Control Issues

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued another warning letter to Medline, a prominent medical device manufacturer, highlighting ongoing issues with manufacturing quality standards. This marks the second warning in as many months, raising concerns about the company’s compliance with federal regulations.

Quality Control Concerns

In a letter dated May 28, the FDA criticized Medline for not thoroughly investigating incidents of microbial contamination in its finished drug products. The agency also pointed out inadequate cleaning practices at Medline’s facilities. These lapses were deemed serious enough to potentially pose a hazard to patient safety.

The FDA’s recent warning follows an earlier letter in April, which identified defects in Medline’s syringes used in heart procedures. The agency had warned of possible enforcement actions if the issues were not promptly addressed. Despite these warnings, Medline has yet to provide a public response to the latest FDA letter.

Regulatory Demands

The FDA has instructed Medline to conduct an independent risk assessment of all contamination hazards across its manufacturing processes, equipment, and facilities. Additionally, the company must submit a comprehensive remediation plan with specific timelines to address these issues.

The letter also noted that Medline’s manufacturing operators have consistently deviated from established cleaning and disinfection procedures. The FDA flagged similar lapses at other facilities within Medline’s network, suggesting systemic management oversight failures.

The FDA emphasized that repeated failures at multiple sites indicate a lack of adequate management control. Medline has been given 15 days to respond to the letter, and failure to comply may result in regulatory or legal actions.
