Maja Chwalinska Advances to French Open Semifinals with Victory Over Kalinskaya

Maja Chwalinska, an unseeded Polish tennis player, has made headlines by advancing to the semifinals of the French Open. She achieved this remarkable feat by defeating the No. 22 seed, Anna Kalinskaya, with a score of 7-6 (3), 6-3. This victory makes Chwalinska only the second Polish woman to reach the semifinals at Roland Garros, joining the ranks of four-time champion Iga Swiatek.

Chwalinska’s journey to the semifinals has been nothing short of extraordinary. She successfully navigated through three qualifying rounds to secure her place among the tournament’s top contenders. Her victory over Kalinskaya was sealed when Kalinskaya’s forehand shot went out, giving Chwalinska the match point she needed.

At 24 years old, Chwalinska expressed her disbelief at her success. ‘I honestly don’t know what’s going on. Every single match here is kind of crazy for me,’ she said. Despite her nerves, she remains focused on her game and is determined to continue her impressive performance.

Chwalinska’s previous best performance at a major tournament was reaching the second round, making this semifinal appearance a significant milestone in her career. Her next challenge will be facing the winner of the quarterfinal match between top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka and No. 25 Diana Shnaider.

Regardless of the outcome of her next match, Chwalinska has already doubled her career earnings. Before the tournament, her total prize money was $864,030, and reaching the semifinals has earned her an additional 750,000 euros, approximately $872,000.

Challenging Conditions

The match against Kalinskaya was played under challenging conditions, with blustery winds affecting play on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Chwalinska initially led 5-1 in the first set, but Kalinskaya fought back, saving set points and breaking Chwalinska’s serve. However, Chwalinska managed to hold her nerve and clinched the first set in a tiebreaker.

Kalinskaya acknowledged the difficulties posed by the weather, stating, ‘I feel like I was fighting against the wind, against the weather conditions, plus against her. Being lefty, it was very tricky today.’ Despite these challenges, Chwalinska’s adaptable game style gave her the upper hand.

In the second set, Chwalinska secured a double break to lead 4-1. Although she dropped her serve while serving for the match at 5-2, she quickly regained control and capitalized on Kalinskaya’s faltering serve to secure her place in the semifinals.

Men’s Quarterfinals

In other matches at the French Open, the men’s quarterfinals saw No. 4 Felix Auger-Aliassime face No. 10 Flavio Cobolli, while unseeded Italians Matteo Berrettini and Matteo Arnaldi competed against each other. Second-seeded Alexander Zverev and No. 26 Jakub Mensik had already secured their spots in the semifinals, setting up an exciting clash between them.
