Indiana Teens Eligible for Driver’s Licenses on 16th Birthday Starting July 1

Starting July 1, Indiana teenagers will have the opportunity to receive their driver’s licenses on their 16th birthday, following a new law signed by Governor Mike Braun. This adjustment lowers the previous minimum age requirement of 16 years and 90 days, allowing young Hoosiers to reach this important milestone sooner.

House Enrolled Act 1200

The change is part of House Enrolled Act 1200, which was signed into law by Braun in March. The governor emphasized that this commonsense update offers families greater flexibility while continuing to uphold the robust safety standards and training requirements that ensure Indiana roads remain safe.

While the age requirement has been adjusted, state officials confirm that the licensing requirements themselves remain unchanged. To qualify for a license at 16, teens must meet specific criteria, including the completion of a driver education program and passing the necessary exams. Additionally, a parent, guardian, or another responsible adult must sign a financial liability agreement for the teen driver.

Motorcycle Endorsements

The new law also extends to motorcycle endorsements, allowing 16-year-olds to obtain them if they meet the state requirements. This provides young drivers with more options as they begin their journey on the road.
