Mayor Jones Discusses Spurs Excitement and Budget Strategies

San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones recently appeared on KSAT’s 6 O’Clock News to discuss the city’s current initiatives and challenges. With the San Antonio Spurs generating significant excitement, Mayor Jones emphasized that her stance on Project Marvel remains unchanged. She attended a recent Spurs game as a guest of local businessman Tullos Wells, adhering to city ethics and gift rules. The experience reinforced her advocacy for revenue sharing, suggesting that the city could benefit from a portion of ticket sales, concessions, and parking fees.

Addressing Budget Challenges

Facing a $131 million budget gap for fiscal year 2028, Mayor Jones has taken proactive steps to address the shortfall. She has reached out to Michael Dell, the founder of Dell Technologies, requesting his assistance in covering part or all of the $489 million required under the current arena proposal. Additionally, Jones has tasked city attorneys with exploring the implementation of admissions and parking taxes, similar to models used in other cities like Fort Worth, to ensure that arena users contribute their fair share.

Collaboration with Bexar County

In an effort to streamline services and reduce costs, Mayor Jones is collaborating with Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai. They are identifying overlapping services, such as animal care, vehicle maintenance, and utility assistance programs, that could be consolidated to minimize overhead. This collaboration aims to optimize resource allocation and improve efficiency for both the city and county.
