McKay High Graduate Balances Cosmetology and Law Enforcement Ambitions

Vanessa Duarte Ignacio, a graduating senior from McKay High School, has successfully balanced her passions for cosmetology and law enforcement. Selected by her teachers and advisors for her leadership and perseverance, Duarte Ignacio has made a mark in the Salem-Keizer School District’s Career Technical Education Center (CTEC).

Initially hesitant about cosmetology, Duarte Ignacio was encouraged by her mother to explore the program at CTEC. Her teacher, Hilda Simpson, recalls that Duarte Ignacio needed convincing that cosmetology was the right fit. However, after her first hands-on experience with hair, she quickly developed a passion for the field.

Throughout her time at CTEC, Duarte Ignacio became known for her determination and entrepreneurial spirit. She excelled in working with hair and esthetics, taking on real clients and promoting her services at events like the CTEC holiday bazaar. Her initiative and leadership were evident as she actively participated in the student leadership team, proposing ideas to foster collaboration among students from different career programs.

Balancing Diverse Interests

In addition to her achievements in cosmetology, Duarte Ignacio has been involved with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office as a cadet since June 2025. Her experiences include ride-alongs, participating in community events, and engaging in law enforcement training exercises. She particularly enjoys conducting traffic stops and is eager to further develop her skills in law enforcement scenarios.

After graduation, Duarte Ignacio plans to attend Chemeketa Community College to study business administration while obtaining her cosmetology license. Her long-term goal is to open her own salon and pursue a career as a deputy with the sheriff’s office, combining her interests in law enforcement and cosmetology.
