Texas Mother Delivers Twins on Oklahoma Highway During Memorial Day Trip

A Texas mother, Shelbee Dugger-Kemp, experienced an unexpected delivery of her twins on the side of Highway 377 near Lake Texoma during a Memorial Day getaway. The twins were born nearly two months ahead of their due date, adding an unexpected twist to the family’s holiday plans.

Unexpected Arrival

Dugger-Kemp, who was 31 weeks pregnant, initially mistook her labor pains for cramps. She quickly realized the urgency of the situation and informed her companion, ‘Mimi,’ that they were about to have babies in the car. Despite the surprise, Dugger-Kemp managed to deliver her first baby, Kane, just six miles down the road. She instinctively cleaned him and kept him warm by wrapping him in a hoodie.

Shortly after, she focused on delivering Kane’s twin brother, Kallen. In a rare occurrence, Kallen was born still in his amniotic sac, a situation Dugger-Kemp described as ‘crazy.’

Family’s Journey Continues

Following the birth, an ambulance transported the family to Mercy Hospital in Ardmore. The twins were later transferred to Oklahoma Children’s Hospital, where they are reportedly doing well, working on maintaining their weight.

The family faced challenges finding accommodations due to local events filling up hotels. They are currently on a waitlist for Ronald McDonald House and are awaiting insurance approval to transfer the twins back to Texas.

This remarkable story highlights the unpredictability of life and the strength of family bonds, even in the face of unexpected challenges.
