North DeSoto High School senior Hayden Bell was named Griffin’s Player of the Week, a recognition that highlights his impact on both sides of the ball and in the classroom. Bell, who plays safety and running back for the Griffin football program, said the award reflects the countless hours he has devoted to improving his game since his freshman year.
On‑field performance and leadership
Bell’s versatility makes him a go‑to option for the Griffin coaching staff. Whether defending against the pass or carrying the ball on offense, his coaches rely on him to make key plays in critical moments. “You get to learn under a leader like Luke, and then you get to become the leader and lead people like Mason,” Bell explained, noting the responsibility of guiding a team that reached the state championship game last season.
He also emphasized the depth of the program, noting that the Griffin roster includes roughly 120 athletes. “Not everyone can say you’re a leader for a team that made a state championship game last year, and you lead this whole team,” Bell said.
Academic excellence
Beyond the gridiron, Bell excels academically with a 4.1 grade point average. He attributes his success to the support of his parents, even if their discipline sometimes includes “punishments” that keep him focused. “Both my parents, probably. My dad does all the punishments, but my mom just gets mad at me,” he joked, adding that his father sometimes withholds money for food or game privileges to keep him on track.
Bell’s favorite subject is mathematics, and he dreams of becoming an engineer after graduation. “One day, your sport is going to end. And your education is the rest of your life. So, you just got to focus on your education because student always comes before athlete,” he said, underscoring the importance of a solid educational foundation.
Scholar‑Athlete recognition
The award is part of a partnership between KTBS and the McNaughton Chapter of the National Football Foundation (NFF). The collaboration honors members of the NFF Scholar‑Athlete Watchlist, presenting 14 local student‑athletes with Griffin’s Game Balls and promising to select a Griffin’s Player of the Year this spring.
The watchlist includes athletes from schools across the region, such as Clay Atkinson (Byrd), Ja’Marion Baker‑Shepard (Plain Dealing), and Peyton “Pop” Houston (Evangel). Bell’s inclusion highlights the balance of athletic talent and academic achievement that the NFF seeks to promote.

As Bell prepares for his senior year, he remains focused on both football and his future studies. His dedication serves as a model for younger teammates and illustrates the value of hard work, discipline, and family support in achieving success on and off the field.
