Indian River County deputy avoids collision as driver crashes into patrol vehicle

Indian River County, Fla. – On Thursday evening, a driver traveling at high speed passed two deputies who were temporarily blocking a lane while a vehicle was being loaded onto a tow truck. The deputy’s quick reaction helped avoid a direct hit, but the driver’s truck subsequently slammed into the rear of a patrol vehicle and careened into a roadside ditch.

Incident details

According to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, the deputies were positioned to ensure the safe loading of a disabled vehicle onto a tow truck. The driver, whose identity was not released, ignored the warning and accelerated past the scene, coming within inches of striking one of the officers.

After the near‑miss, the driver’s truck collided with the back of a patrol car that was stationed nearby. The impact forced the vehicle into a shallow ditch on the side of the road. Emergency responders arrived promptly, and the driver was transported to a trauma center with injuries classified as non‑life‑threatening.

Law enforcement response

No deputies sustained injuries in the incident, and the Sheriff’s Office has not filed any criminal charges at this time. Officials reminded motorists of the importance of slowing down and moving over when they encounter flashing lights or law‑enforcement activity on the roadway.

“Our deputies were performing a routine safety operation, and we appreciate the driver’s cooperation in getting medical care quickly,” said a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office. “We continue to urge all drivers to respect traffic controls and give law‑enforcement personnel the space they need to keep our roads safe.”

Public safety reminder

The incident underscores a broader safety message for drivers throughout Indian River County and the state of Florida. When law‑enforcement vehicles are present, slowing down, yielding the right‑of‑way, and maintaining a safe distance can prevent accidents and protect both officers and the traveling public.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about local traffic advisories and to report any hazardous driving behavior to the Sheriff’s Office. The department remains committed to maintaining safe roadways and will continue to enforce traffic laws that protect families and communities.
