Breakfast at The General Muir Is Worth Planning Your Morning Around

The line starts forming before the door opens. On a Saturday in Emory Village, you’ll find a cluster of people on the sidewalk outside The General Muir, coffees in hand, waiting without complaint. That’s your first signal that something here is worth slowing down for.

The General Muir is a Jewish-American deli — the real kind, not the theme-park version — and it’s been anchoring the Emory Village section of Atlanta since 2013. Husband-and-wife team Jennifer and Ben Johnson, along with partners Todd Ginsberg and Shelley Sweet, built the place around the kind of cooking that’s specific and uncompromising: housemade pastrami, hand-rolled bagels, latkes that actually hold up. The dining room is bright and clean, with white subway tile and dark wood, and it fills up fast.

Order the pastrami on rye if you want to understand what the fuss is about. It comes piled high — salt-cured, smoked, sliced thick — with yellow mustard and nothing else it doesn’t need. The bagels are dense and chewy with a proper crust, the way a bagel should be before the word got applied to soft bread circles. Get one toasted with lox and cream cheese, or order the Everything Bagel Sandwich if you want eggs and bacon folded into the picture. Both hold up.

The matzo ball soup is patient and correct: a single large matzo ball in clear, golden broth, the kind of thing you order in November but find yourself craving in August anyway. The latkes — crisp outside, tender inside — come with sour cream and applesauce, and they’re better than anything you’d put together at home without a lot of practice.

Lunch runs a little quieter than weekend brunch, and that’s the smarter window if you want a table without strategizing. The Reuben is the move at midday: house-made corned beef, Swiss, sauerkraut, Russian dressing on grilled rye. It’s big and correct and not trying to be anything other than what it is. Prices are reasonable for the quality — sandwiches run $15–$20, most plates land in that same range, and the portions are serious.

The coffee comes from Batdorf & Bronson, a roaster out of Georgia, and it’s well-pulled and consistent. Pick up a piece of rugelach or a black-and-white cookie from the pastry case on your way out. These aren’t afterthoughts — the baking program is tight.

What makes The General Muir feel distinct from most of Atlanta’s dining scene is that it has a specific culinary identity it actually sticks to. The menu doesn’t drift toward trends or pivot with the seasons in a way that loses the thread. It knows what it is: a deli that takes its craft seriously, in a city where that specific thing is genuinely rare.

Parking can be tricky around Emory Village on weekends — the lot off Clifton Road fills quickly — so budget a few extra minutes. The wait for a table is usually 20–30 minutes on Saturday mornings, and they don’t take reservations for brunch. Go anyway. Bring someone who appreciates a well-made sandwich, find a spot on the bench outside, and wait.
