Arlington Council Sets $4 Million Reserve for Possible MLB Lockout

Fort Worth, TX – Hundreds of Rangers supporters filled Globe Life Field Thursday for the team’s 3‑1 home win over the New York Mets, the final regular‑season game at the venue. While fans celebrated the victory, city leaders were focused on a different concern: a possible work stoppage in Major League Baseball.

City prepares financial safety net

During the August 4 budget session, Arlington City Manager Trey Yelverton recommended that the council allocate part of the city’s business continuity reserve fund – roughly $4 million – to cover lost tax revenue and protect employees if owners and the MLB Players Association fail to reach a new collective bargaining agreement.

“We would allocate these dollars as an offset for any lockout‑related revenue loss, so the city isn’t forced to dip into other tight‑budget areas,” Yelverton told council members. The motion passed unanimously.

Fans worry about impact on community

Local fans expressed concern that a lockout would hurt not only the team’s supporters but also the many workers who depend on game‑day employment. “It’s not fair to the employees,” said Michelle Salazar, a Fort Worth resident who attends games with her mother. “We don’t know how many people survive off what they make here. It hurts the fans, but it hurts the employees more.”

Long‑time Rangers fan Joe Hoofnagle of Rockwall, who has followed the team for 45 years, voiced optimism that a lockout will be avoided, noting the potential damage to tourism and local restaurants.

Labor talks and salary‑cap proposal

The current collective bargaining agreement expires on Dec. 1. Negotiations have stalled over a proposed league‑wide salary cap, which MLB says would level the playing field, while the MLBPA argues it would take money out of players’ pockets. MLBPA Executive Director Bruce Meyer reiterated the union’s belief in a merit‑based system that rewards performance.

Should talks extend into March or April, the regular season could be delayed or games canceled, echoing the 1994 strike that wiped out the World Series and the 2021‑22 lockout that lasted 99 days.

Economic stakes for Arlington

Rangers games draw fans from across North Texas, generating sales‑tax revenue and supporting local businesses. A prolonged stoppage would reduce that income and could strain the city’s budget, making the reserve fund a prudent precaution.

City officials emphasized that the fund would only be used if a lockout materializes; otherwise, the money remains untouched, preserving fiscal stability for other priorities.

Looking ahead

Fans remain hopeful that owners and players will reach a compromise before the next season begins. As one fan put it, “They need to come to some compromise” – a sentiment echoed by many who value both the sport and the community jobs it supports.
