Rapper Macklemore announced a $1 million pledge to Palestinian relief nonprofits, directing the net earnings from his recent Ed Sheeran Loop Tour to organizations that provide medical care, food, and shelter to those affected by the ongoing conflict.
Recipients and immediate impact
The funds will be divided among Medical Aid for Palestinians, the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, UNRWA, and Anera. Leaders of these groups praised the donation for both its financial boost and the heightened public attention it brings to the dire conditions faced by Palestinians.
“Even if you don’t see bombs falling every night, the rubble is still there,” said Alicia Phillips Mandaville, acting CEO of Anera. “And the traumatized children are still traumatized.” Tareq Hailat, director of strategic engagement at the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, added that his phone “rings all the time” with calls from people in Gaza seeking help.
Flexibility for on‑the‑ground needs
Both Anera and the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund plan to place their shares of the gift into unrestricted funds, allowing them to respond quickly to evolving crises such as flooding, acute hunger, or medical emergencies. “If there’s flooding again this year like there was last year, we can deal with that,” Mandaville said.
Broader ripple effect
The pledge has already spurred additional contributions. YouTube personality and music teacher Ms. Rachel announced a matching $1 million donation to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, while New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft pledged to match Ed Sheeran’s own $2 million contribution for regional aid.
Online influencers have raised more than $72,000 for the same cause, and Anera reported a three‑fold increase in daily donations following Macklemore’s post. UNRWA USA noted that its donor base has grown by over 200,000 since October 2023, enabling the organization to deliver more than $117 million in assistance.
Context of the crisis
Since the fragile cease‑fire began last October, Israeli operations have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians, and hundreds of thousands continue to struggle for basic healthcare, water, and food in the West Bank and Gaza. The United Nations’ leading food‑insecurity authority warned in July that most Gaza families still lack sufficient nutrition.
By channeling his earnings into unrestricted humanitarian aid, Macklemore hopes to keep the conversation focused on the needs of the Palestinian people and encourage further private‑sector support for relief efforts.
