Free Heart Health Screenings Offered at Washington Convention Center for Black Community

Washington, D.C. – In response to the disproportionately high rates of cardiovascular disease among Black Americans, the nonprofit Black Heart Association (BHA) is hosting free health screenings this Thursday and Friday at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The screenings, held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the BLKHLTH Booth #664 during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s annual legislative conference, aim to identify risk factors early and promote prevention over treatment.

Why the Focus on Black Communities?

According to the American Heart Association’s 2026 data, while 48.9% of all U.S. adults have some form of cardiovascular disease, the prevalence rises to 63% for Black males and 59.5% for Black females. BHA co‑founder Tara Robinson, who survived three heart attacks before age 40, attributes the disparity to a mix of stress, diet, systemic healthcare inequities, and limited access to safe exercise spaces.

Community‑Based Approach

Robinson emphasized that reaching people where they already gather—such as a national conference—makes health education more relatable. “These events matter because we can talk health in a way that resonates with our people,” she said. The organization hopes the screenings will empower participants to understand their inherited risk for heart attacks or strokes and take proactive steps.

Barriers to Heart Health

Robinson highlighted several challenges faced by poorer neighborhoods, including a lack of walking trails, gyms, and affordable healthcare. “We carry a lot of worry—racism, bias, and other stresses—plus we love our families and often express that love through comfort food,” she explained. The screenings aim to bridge the gap by offering free, on‑site assessments and guidance.

What to Expect at the Booth

Attendees will receive blood pressure checks, cholesterol screenings, and basic risk assessments. BHA staff will also provide educational materials on lifestyle changes, nutrition, and safe exercise options tailored to the community’s needs.

Looking Ahead

Robinson hopes the initiative will spark broader conversations about cardiovascular health in Black neighborhoods nationwide. “Prevention over treatment is the key,” she said, urging more organizations to bring health resources directly to the people who need them most.
