Boys & Girls Clubs expands after‑school program to La Pine, offering safe care for working families

La Pine, Ore. – The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon announced a major expansion of its after‑school services, adding a new program at the La Pine Community Center. The initiative will serve children from La Pine Elementary, Rosland Elementary and La Pine Middle School, operating Monday through Friday until 6:30 p.m.

Ribbon‑cutting ceremony celebrates the launch

A ribbon‑cutting ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 18 at the La Pine Club. Former U.S. decathlon champion and two‑time Olympic gold‑medalist Ashton Eaton will join community members and families at 2:45 p.m., with the official ribbon‑cutting at 3:00 p.m.

Program designed for working families

The expansion directly addresses the growing demand for reliable after‑school care among La Pine’s working families. Staff will escort La Pine Elementary students to the center, while separate transportation will be provided for Rosland Elementary attendees. Annual youth memberships cost $25, and scholarships or financial assistance are available for families experiencing financial hardship.

Comprehensive activities and academic support

Participants will receive academic support and tutoring, active recreation, creative enrichment and mentorship. A dedicated “Power Hour” offers reading assistance, and hands‑on projects introduce technology, engineering, math, robotics and art. The program’s holistic approach aims to foster both academic growth and personal development.

Leadership emphasizes family impact

Michael Baker, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon, highlighted the program’s focus on helping local parents and students. “Expanding into La Pine allows us to directly support working families who need safe, high‑quality after‑school care they can trust,” Baker said. “Every child deserves an after‑school environment filled with fun, discovery and support. Bringing our programs to La Pine delivers both — offering safe, high‑quality care for working families while unlocking exciting new opportunities for La Pine kids.”

Community response

Local residents expressed enthusiasm for the new offering, noting that reliable after‑school options have been limited in the area. Parents anticipate that the program will ease daily logistics and provide a constructive environment for their children after the school day ends.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon plans to monitor enrollment and community feedback throughout the first year, with the goal of expanding services further if demand continues to rise.
